We Can’t Stop Staring at These Extremely Weird Stock Photos

Stock photos are weird.

You might think this was something you already knew, but trust us, you’ve barely scratched the surface.

We need to talk about all those nonsensical hacker photos

Over the past few weeks, British journalist Andy Kelly has shown us just how much the rabbit hole goes with @darkstockphotos – a collection of the darkest and most bizarre images available from sites like iStock and Shutterstock.

“I’ve always found stock photography hilarious, and while digging through the depths of Shutterstock, I noticed a few that stood out among all the smiling models playing tennis and eating salad. Some were disturbing , but most of them were just funny,” Kelly said. we. “No matter how serious the subject, the absurd artifice and brutality of stock photography make it fun.”

“There really isn’t any art. I just search stock photo websites (mostly Shutterstock, iStock, and Depositphotos) using the worst possible keywords. Death, gun, drugs, accident, despair, pain , suffering. The darker the search, the more fun the images in general.”

The images are certainly striking. For a while we wondered if they were the real deal. We’ve added links and caption/search terms to each image so you can see for yourself. “Some images are just plain sad or depressing, and I try to avoid those and pick the ones that are funny in some way, or just so wrong they can’t be taken seriously.” adds Kelly.

From inflatable dolls to horse masks, here are some of the “highlights”.

10. No caption needed! It’s just weird, pure and simple.

There are more on the Twitter feed, but be warned, they can be quite dark. And it goes without saying that the behavior described is certainly not something to try at home.

“I’ve been on Twitter since 2008 and have created several ‘new’ accounts, but this has been by far the most successful. The reaction has been ridiculous,” Kelly said. “I couldn’t tell you why, but I think it helps to find the story fun without speaking a particular language.”

“Judging by my mentions, this is the most multicultural thing I’ve ever done on Twitter, which is cool. A baby smoking or a girl taking a selfie with an AK-47 is funny no matter where you’re from, I guess.

A picture is worth a thousand words !
