Iwaria: Download African Themed Society Photos

The saying necessity is the mother of all invention doesn’t seem so far-fetched when it comes to the story of Iwaria. Crawl the internet to find stories of how Iwaria CEO Aurelle Noutahi settled on the idea of Africa-focused stock images.

Aurelle was looking for images depicting people and scenarios familiar to her target audience. Most of the results came back negative.

“And even when we were getting positive results on black people, the style and the environment were generally not African,” recalls his business partner, Médrid Barrincio, who oversaw the development of the apps.

In 2016, Aurelle Noutahi and co-founder Basile Barrincio decided to fill the big void by creating Iwaria, a stock photo platform that provides authentic, high-quality African images.

The photos include collections such as I love sports, transportation, architecture, education, and the coronavirus section, among others, to provide ample choice for users.

The platform gets most of its photos from contributions on the web. According to an episode of the Africa Calling podcast, Iwaria currently has 500 contributors who share their images on the crowdsourced platform.

Based on platform user statistics, we identify the topics our users need, organize photo shoots to feed the platform with those topics where content is lacking,” Barrincio explains on Africa Calling Podcast.

How to upload your photos to Iwaria?

Much like Unsplash and other free image platforms, Iwaria sources its photos from contributors who submit them under the Creative Commons Zero License.

The downside with CC0 is that dishonest contributors submit copyrighted material to which they do not own any rights and Iwaria is careful to include detailed terms of use to get out of potential legal complications.

To be a contributor, create an account (choose to log in with Facebook, Twitter or Google) and click the upload button to submit a photo. Be sure to read the upload guidelines so your images don’t get rejected.

Iwaria is a great idea if you are a blogger, artist or designer looking for Africa themed stock images to use. The other collection that would be highly appreciated is a collection of the most popular cities across the continent with their beauty and what makes them unique. Let us know if you are going to adopt Iwaria and it will become your go-to platform when looking for African themed stock images.
