Canva builds the Netflix of stock photos – Pickr


Australian Canva has shown it can change the way we design and edit graphics, and now it’s taking stock photos, delivering a service that’s even managed to absorb two well-known players into this world.

If you’re running a website, creating flyers or printables, or generally looking for images to use in your presentations, you’re probably all too familiar with stock libraries and images.

For those who don’t, good images fall into one of three camps:

  1. You break them yourself
  2. You buy the rights to use them on a paid stock library
  3. You are trying to find something in a free stock library

The latter has become more popular in recent years, thanks in part to the strength and popularity of free stock libraries, backed by photographers hoping for a line of credit, even if it’s not really necessary.

Libraries like Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay provide images for free, which differs greatly from the model used by paid stock libraries, such as iStock, Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, and Getty, which charge money for usage rights. of an image online or in print. Often these prices can be quite high, forcing people to pay or choose an image that may not be quite what they want.

However, there could be changes on the horizon for the world of high-priced stock photography.

Australian online image design and editing solution that is Canva has created what looks almost like Netflix-style unlimited access to stock photos, charging a monthly price to access millions of stock photos.

Called “Photos Unlimited”, it’s an attempt to divert attention away from buying photos of a model that remains out of reach for many users, forcing them to look to other sources. images, which can include image theft, a decision that can land them in legal trouble if discovered.

Free stock libraries can easily contribute to this and have been designed to democratize content while gaining recognition for the work of photographers. And in the process of creating this service, Canva also acquired two of these free stock libraries, leaving their work free under a Creative Commons CC0 license that makes them available to everyone in the public domain.

The two websites Canva has acquired are Pexels and Pixabay, which will have their libraries included as part of the subscription model, but will still be free under ownership.

Canva’s premium photo library, however, will be part of a $12.95 monthly plan that provides access to the entire library, which the company says has around 50 million photos, and includes libraries free photos.

“There’s a lot of synergy between Canva and Pexels – it’s a perfect match,” said Ingo Jospeh, co-founder of Pexels.

“No other design platform truly believes in the mission of empowering the world to design like Canva, and providing free content is core to their mission,” he said.

“Today’s announcement is a huge step in the right direction. We’re about to put an end to corny stock photos and open the doors to more authentic and trending content for free.

The photo library will complement Canva’s services, which are based on an online platform to help people design images online and print, allowing anyone to create designs without the need for a designer or professional design software on his computer.

Over the past year, Canva has also added Zeetings to its acquisitions, an Australian slideshow creation service that changes the way PowerPoint presentations were run and which Canva now operates alongside.

Launched in 2013, Canva’s service has over 15 million users and has grown through development and acquisitions, supporting a range of services focused on providing easy-to-use brand design tools, including color palettes, animated designs, and support for transparent images, either online or with apps.

“At Canva, we believe that everyone should have access to all the ingredients needed for design, not just those who can afford it,” said Melanie Perkins, Co-Founder and CEO of Canva.

“With these two announcements today, we’re empowering everyone to visually communicate their ideas in the best possible way – the potential is limitless,” she said.

Canva Photos Unlimited is rolling out this week on Canva for $12.95 per month and is a separate service from Canva Pro.
